Saturday, April 18th: Gaussian Processes for Machine Learning

04/16/2009, 4:46 PM

Dr Amir Atiya, Cairo University and member of the DMCM CoE will give a specialized talk on Gaussian Processes for Machine Learning.

The talk will take place at the Seminar Room at the Faculty of Computers, Cairo University and it will start at 2:00pm

Dr Amir will present a short overview over a relatively new model called Gaussian processes. Gaussian processes is a nonparametric classification and regression method based on Bayesian analysis.

The method assumes some prior distribution on the function to be approximated that guarantees some smoothness properties. Based on that prior, the classification or the prediction can be computed using some probability manipulations. It has proved itself as a very effective method, and it is also very flexible.

Dr Amir will review the general theory behind Gaussian process classification and
regression, and show its superior performance.

Researchers and postgraduate students are all invited to attend the talk.
